The Component Parts Of A Projector Lamp Or DLP TV Lamp
There are various phrases used to describe the major components of a rear projection television or multimedia projector lamp, some of which are sometimes used interchangeably, and occasionally incorrectly. You may have seen reference to the phrases projector burner, projector lamp, and projector bulb, and have heard the terms projector lamp reflectors, lamp cages or housing, projector lamp modules and lamp connectors. Due to the fact that numerous websites which offer replacement projector lamps do not explain fully what they mean by each projector lamp term, Projector Lamp Experts UK has produced a series of labeled lamp diagrams showing how the various projector and rear projection television lamp parts are combined, which should help you to tell exactly what a website is selling when you are shopping for a replacement projector lamp on the internet.
The diagrams below show the key components of a typical replacement projector or TV lamp. The parts that it is useful to be aware of are the lamp, the burner, the module and the connectors. These six projector lamp terms are the ones which are confused the most often.
Adding to the confusion about how a projector lamp is defined and named is that occasionally, resellers of replacement projector lamps may offer a bare projector bulb without the black plastic housing, which is clearly a different product to a complete, user replaceable lamp module with housing, although the two might be labeled the same online. This practice can waste time and money for UK customers if the mistake is only discovered after the lamp they have bought online is delivered.
Projector Lamp Module Naming Conventions
The term "projector lamp" is usually used by people in the multimedia projector and DLP TV industry to describe what would more accurately be described as a "complete projector lamp module" which means a projector lamp which includes the projector lamp bulb and the black plastic housing around the lamp.
A complete projector lamp module is made up of the following 3 main component parts:
- A projector lamp burner and a lamp reflector, which is referred to collectively as the "bare projector lamp", and which is usually manufactured by Philips, Ushio, Osram or another major projector lamp manufacturer.
- The plastic projector lamp module housing, which may also be called the lamp cage.
- The projector lamp connectors, which ultimately connect the projector lamp to the projector itself, providing the projector lamp with a power source.
The labeled image underneath displays these three main constituent parts:

The Key Parts Of A Bare Projector Lamp
The bare projector lamp is a combination of two main parts: the projector lamp reflector and the high intensity discharge bulb, also called the projector lamp burner. These parts are displayed in the diagrams that follow.
The High Intensity Discharge Projector Bulb, Or Projector Lamp Burner

The High Intensity Discharge projector bulb (HID projector bulb) is what produces the projector lamp's light output. When the gaseous metal halide atoms inside the HID projector bulb are excited by an electrical charge passing between two the electrodes in the spherical middle part of the bulb, light is emitted. The HID projector bulb is also commonly referred to as the projector lamp burner, the middle part of which is shown in close up in the images below.

The HID projector bulb is then placed within a projector lamp reflector and glass front plate. Once these parts have been combined the result is called the bare projector lamp. The labeled projector lamp diagram below shows how the component parts fit together to produce a bare projector lamp. Included on this labeled image is the rear lamp connector the side lamp connector. These connectors are how the complete projector lamp module will be connected to the projector itself.

Occasionally, UK projector lamp websites may offer these bare projector lamps for sale alongside complete projector lamp modules, often for a slightly lower price. However, if a bare projector lamp is purchased without any plastic housing around it, the bare projector lamp will need to be installed inside your old used projector lamp housing before it can be put into the projector. Projector Lamp Experts UK does not recommend that UK projector lamp shoppers undertake this complicated and sometimes risky procedure, and so only full and complete projector lamp modules including housing, which are easy for users to replace themselves, are offered on the Projector Lamp Experts UK website.
How A Complete Projector Lamp Module Is Made
The bare projector lamp, consisting of the HID projector bulb and projector lamp reflector, is then installed inside a plastic projector lamp housing, which is also called the projector lamp cage. This projector lamp housing is designed specifically for the correct model of projector or rear projection TV. The image below shows a projector lamp housing, or projector lamp cage, which has had the bare projector lamp removed.

The connectors then join the complete projector lamp module to the projector. The three part image underneath shows visually how all each of the component parts of the complete projector lamp module are combined together to produce a working projector or TV lamp.
